Bens aspires to visit the Kukkiwon in Seoul, Korea. He feels strongly that every Taekwondo student should have the opportunity to visit the world headquarters of Taekwondo.
Ben started his training in taekwondo by joining the United States Chung Do Kwan Association in 1979. Through determination and hard work he was awarded his first degree black belt in 1985. He had his school in a Catholic Church in Dexter, Michigan and knew teaching was in his blood. Later he got married and moved away.
Ben received another black belt in Iki Shin Do, a Japanese style martial art, very similar to Taekwondo. In 2006 his daughter asked him to teach her Taekwondo, so he opened his school – Island City Taekwondo. She has since gone off to school and he continues to compete and teach.
During his years in high school, Ben loved sports. The one sport he excelled at was track, and above all else he excelled at pole vaulting and obtained a scholarship to Northwood Institute. It was at this time that he had a calling to become an Olympic athlete, but not in the summer Olympics, rather the winter through skiing. Ben also loves freestyle skiing. At that time freestyle skiing consisted of moguls, ballet and aerials. Just prior to the 1984 Olympics he had an injury on the slopes that diminished those dreams. That didn’t stop him from his passion to compete. He focused on Taekwondo.
